Ballon d’or 2016

The 2016 Ballon d’or ceremony won’t be until 2016 but everybody is already talking about it. Like every year, the 2 favourite candidates are Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and I think this year either of the 2 players could win the golden ball.

Why?

Each player could win for different reasons. Let’s talk about the Portuguese superstar first.

Ronaldo: Last season Ronaldo scored 51 goals and gave 15 assists, extraterrestrial performance one more time. This current season Ronaldo has scored 7 goals and given 4 assists, you can tell that the numbers significantly lower this season.

Ronaldo has a big chance to win one more time basically because he won the Champions League with Real Madrid, and the Euro 2016 with Portugal. I don’t want to be misunderstood, his numbers are exceptional, but if he beats Messi this year it’s going to be because he won more trophies than the Argentinian. As I said, Ronaldos numbers are out of reach for almost everybody, but there’s something else to analyze when you have to decide who should be the new Ballon d’or winner. Of course he scores a lot and also assists his teammates when it’s necessary but Ronaldo is not the kind of player that makes a team play better.

If the team is playing well he’ll be more in touch with the ball in the danger zone and probably he’ll get to score/assist a couple times, because he’s one of the best players worldwide. If the team is not playing well, he can also reverse the situation rescuing his team and deciding the game. But what Ronaldo can’t do is move the team by himself, and that’s the main difference between being the best forward and the best player.

Messi: If Messi wins this golden ball it’s going to be because voters will put team trophies a side. Also, we have to remember that Barcelona won La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercup last year, so it was also a good year for Messi when it comes to team trophies. But if Messi wins it will be basically because voters will take in consideration his ability to move a team, to make the whole team grow and play better. He did it last season, and on top of that he scored 41 goals and gave 21 assists. This season Messi has scored 14 goals and given 6 assists.

How does he do that? Well, I like to put it this way. When Messi plays as a forward, he’s the best, if not, the second best forward worldwide. On top of that, he can play as a midfielder and be the best in the world in that position as well. Same thing if he plays in the left or right flank. So imagine a team that has a player that keeps changing positions, and everywhere he plays he performs like the best player in that position worldwide…. In one same game!!

Messi

As I said, it’s going to be a tight race this year. Personal opinion… Cristiano Ronaldo might be the best forward I’ve ever seen, and Lionel Messi is the greatest player in the history of soccer.
